Wet Meadows Slide, US 26 / 287 - N302051

The Wet Meadows Slide was an embankment failure near milepost 21 along Togwotee Pass (US 26/89).  This area is an ancient slide complex that was destabilized by the realignment and widening of the US 26/89 corridor in 2010.  The slow-moving nature of WMS led to a prolonged period of observation and investigations from 2012 to 2017.  The roadway became very deformed and damaged during this time and required yearly maintenance patches.

In considering the budgetary, constructability, and environmental site limitations; the selected remedial design inculded unloading the 1:3 embankment to a 1:2 slope and installing two pads of horizontal drains to lower the groundwater across the site.  A deep patch for the road section was also constructed along the damaged area to create a more robust roadway capable of resisting minor sliding movement in the future.
